"Greek Art Now": Contemporary Greek Art on the Global Stage via Google Arts & Culture
The “Greek Art Now” initiative on the Google Arts & Culture platform is an ambitious project dedicated to the digitization and international promotion of selected artworks from the collections of three major Greek museum institutions: the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), and the Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki – MOMus.
Implemented with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the project represents a multifaceted collaboration between Google Arts & Culture and the participating museums, and is now freely accessible to the public via the Google Arts & Culture website and mobile app (Android & iOS).
Through the platform, users can take 360° virtual tours of the participating museums, explore intricate details of artworks using the art camera, uncover hidden stories and narratives, and interact with works of art in new ways — digitally deconstructing and reconstructing them from a different, interactive perspective. The platform also offers immersive augmented reality experiences.
With over 60 digital stories and 1,800 high-resolution images, the project showcases the evolution of Greek art from the 19th century to the present day, highlights contemporary Greek artists, and includes selected works from the internationally renowned Costakis Collection.
MOMus in "Greek Art Now"
As part of the “Greek Art Now” initiative, MOMus contributes over 900 artworks drawn from its constituent museums — the Museum of Modern Art–Costakis Collection, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the Experimental Center for the Arts, and the Alex Mylona Museum. These works highlight the breadth and significance of modern and contemporary art over a span of 130 years (1890–2020).
Digitisation of the works was carried out by Google Arts & Culture using state-of-the-art technology, such as scanners and the Art Camera, as part of a project launched in 2020 and successfully implemented despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through a diverse selection of digitized paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs — fully documented in both Greek and English — users in Greece and around the world are invited to explore the work of prominent Greek and international artists featured in the MOMus collections. The platform also offers standalone digital "stories" on key artworks, information about the mission and activities of each museum, and the opportunity for 3D virtual exploration of selected interior museum spaces.
